NFL Preseason Week 3 - Isaiah Likely? More like "Isaiah Retweet-ly," amiright? Huh? Huh?
Sorry. All puns about Baltimore Ravens rookie tight end Likely are instant Fozzie Bear groaners. Even Walkthrough can't come up with a good one. And the Likely lad's career hasn't even started yet. He should change the pronunciation of his name to L'Kelly. That way headline writers would be less l'kelly to try to come up with "clever" wordplay.
Likely is a preseason sensation. He's also one of the few interesting Ravens stories this summer. Lamar Jackson contract talks are rusting on blocks in front of team headquarters in Owings Mills; Walkthrough suspects that the Ravens are offering "Josh Allen money, but with secret trapdoors into the Lava Pit of Poverty!" while Jackson is asking, "Maybe you should throw in, I dunno, a free submarine!" The team's solution to its wide receiver problem is to determine how long it will take newcomer Demarcus Robinson to learn a playbook. ("Six years," Andy Reid responds.) Search for news on injured former All-Pro left tackle Ronnie Stanley and your browser crashes. Likely's emergence isn't just the Ravens' best preseason news; he's practically their only news.
Likely is one of the Ravens' half-dozen (not an exaggeration) fourth-round picks in 2022. He caught 59 passes and 12 touchdowns in his final season for Coastal Carolina. He did NOT crack the FO 40 for skill position players. Walkthrough tends to be skeptical of small-conference biggest-fastest-guy-in-the-slot tight ends: it's hard to translate four touchdowns against Arkansas State into NFL success without overshooting a bit. For every Dallas Goedert coming out of a small program with impressive stats and measurements, there's at least one Adam Shaheen.
It looks as though Likely will be a keeper. But what will his immediate impact really be?
Likely, like Goedert behind Zach Ertz for the 2018 Eagles, will start his career as a TE2 (at best) behind a Pro Bowler. Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley spent last Sunday night against the Arizona Cardinals dropping back to pass, taking one look at his receivers, saying "screw it" and scrambling and/or throwing to Likely, who caught eight of eight targets for 100 yards and one touchdown. Jackson and Huntley often found themselves going through the same progression last year before throwing to Mark Andrews, who led tight ends and finished ninth in the NFL among all receivers with 153 targets in 2021.
Likely will eat into the playing time of Nick Boyle, the block-first TE2 coming off a 2020 ACL injury that continued to impact him in 2021. The Ravens deployed 22 personnel (two backs, two tight ends) 13% of the time and 12 personnel 8% of the time according to Football Outsiders Almanac 2022, so there are plenty of roles for multiple tight ends. Andrews spent more time in the slot or flexed out than lined up next to a tackle last season, and Likely has taken many slot snaps this preseason. It's possible they could share that role, with offensive coordinator Greg Roman upping the 12-personnel rate and taking some slot snaps away from [insert Ravens receiver who has been loitering on the roster running jet sweeps for three years here] and giving them to tight ends.
On the other hand: a) Andrews is excellent in his current role, so it doesn't make sense to tweak it too much; b) someone needs to be the in-line tight end in most packages, and Likely blocks like a pumped-up Sun Belt slot receiver; and c) both common sense and history tell us that mid-round tight ends rarely have a major statistical impact.
Here are the best statistical rookie seasons ever by tight ends drafted in the third round or later, ranked by total receptions:
It sure looks like there's a cap on what a mid-round rookie tight end can accomplish, whether due to injuries or inexperience, and none of the players above were stuck behind a veteran tight end of Andrews' caliber.
Given the nature of the Ravens offense, a 45-520-6 type statline as a combination TE3/WR3 seems attainable for Likely; Walkthrough goosed the touchdown total because Likely looks like a better goal-line target than any Ravens receiver but Andrews. But that's not a KUBIAK projection; it's a best-case scenario for 2022.
Fantasy experts know the deal when it comes to rookie tight ends not named Kyle Pitts. Likely is rising up draft boards, but his EDP has gone from "after midnight in ultra-deep keeper leagues for obsessives" to "don't laugh too hard when your brother-in-law from Towson takes him in the final round."
Ravens fans, on the other hand, need someone to scoop up Marquise Brown's 91 catches and 146 targets from last season. And it would be swell if Andrews' targets dipped down closer to 100 or so; both Jackson and Huntley looked to their tight end when he was surrounded by defenders a little too often in 2021.
If Likely were George Pickens, Romeo Doubs, or Alec Pierce, it would be easy to pencil in a WR3/WR4 role and assume that a not-so-heralded rookie could handle the workload and help the offense. Why not assume that Likely can do the same thing in an offense that's just built differently? With two tight ends stretching the field vertically, Ravens receivers can focus on a quick-outs-and-reverses game without limiting Jackson too much. Pity the poor linebackers and safeties who must worry about Andrews and Likely up the seam PLUS Jackson read-option concepts from 12 or 22 packages. And even if their rookie numbers don't win any fantasy leagues, midround tight ends can eventually develop into Jason Witten, Jimmy Graham, Kittle, or Andrews.
It's probable that Likely will turn out to be more than a preseason phenomenon. There's a strong chance that he plays a modest-but-meaningful role in the Ravens offense and helps Jackson regain some of his 2019/2020 luster. And it's inevitable that writers will torture sentences to prevent themselves from writing, "It's likely that Likely will succeed," because we are afraid that you, dear readers, will seek us out and slap us if we do.
Transactions, news, and other notes from the last four days or so…
Kenny Pickett has been impressive, but Walkthrough is still leaning toward Mitch Tribusky, no matter how Sunday shakes out. If Trubisky starts the season, struggles against the Bengals and Patriots, and gets benched for Pickett, no one bats an eyelash. If Pickett starts, struggles, and gets benched, it looks like a setback and a dangerous coaching risk. Tomlin understands the optics, and it's not like Trubisky has been a disaster or Pickett looks like Dan Marino.
Walkthrough reported last week that the Kellen Mond experiment was going poorly in Minnesota, despite boxscore scouting to the contrary. The situation deteriorated on Saturday night when both Mond and Sean Mannion played poorly against the 49ers, though they got zero help from their pass-catchers.
The new Kwesi Adofo-Mensah/Kevin O'Connell administration made almost zero put-our-stamp-on-the-roster moves in the offseason. Cutting Mond, a third-round pick in 2021, would signal to the rest of the squad that anyone can lose his scholarship at any time.
Does that mean Kirk Cousins is starting?
See put-our-stamp-on-the-roster moves, which are not always a bad thing; Brandon Bolden can assume Drake's third-down role and help captain the special teams, with rookie Zamir White as the third back in the committee and seventh-rounder Brittain Brown a likely practice squad stash. Expect a lot of turnover on the bottom half of the Raiders roster when final cutdowns are announced.
Also, anyone hot and heavy for their team to trade for Kareem Hunt should wait to determine how many other Drake-caliber running backs end up on the waiver wire.
Watkins and Rodgers has probably stayed up three straight nights munching on Bolivian torch cactus and battling negativity wraiths* on the astral plane with Rodgers, so this tracks.
They can start Smith when they want a quick three-and-out and then insert Lock when they would prefer a turnover.
The Chargers open the season against Davante Adams and the Raiders, then host the Chiefs on Thursday Night Football in Week 2. You may want to jump off the Chargers Super Bowl bandwagon at the next exit.
The team waived Lirim Hajrullahu on Tuesday. The Jaguars actually had zero kickers on their roster at that point, but Trent Baalke tried and failed to type "Lirim Hajrullahu" onto a waiver sheet three times, screamed "F*CK THIS" and signed James McCourt instead.
Veteran Matt Haack was waived. Did you hear that, Howie Roseman? Matt Haack: experienced, affordable, and available. Walkthrough can furnish his agent's phone number if you need it, Howie. Just slide into our DMs and ... ah crap the Colts signed him.

New York Giants preseason announcers Bob Papa and Carl Banks were pressed into some hard labor tamping down any potential Daniel Jones/Tyrod Taylor quarterback controversy during last Sunday's broadcast.
To paraphrase: Now, Tyrod is scheduled to take some snaps with the starters. But Brian Daboll made it clear that he just wants to see how the offense performs under Taylor. You know, Jones has gotten hurt every year. But that's not a knock on Jones! It's just the reality that a team will likely need its backup quarterback at some time during the season. And Tyrod is that backup, because Jones is a Josh Allen just taking his historic leap!
Taylor himself snuffed any possible controversies by being Taylor: it's hard to complete seven of 11 passes for 37 yards against a bunch of Bengals backups, but Taylor somehow found a way. That's not the point, however. The Giants public relations department and coaching staff, probably in that order, saw a quarterback controversy narrative barreling down the turnpike, so they tasked Papa and Banks with putting up barricades.
The opposite phenomenon took place in Minnesota. Announcers Paul Allen and Pete Bercich didn't bother pulling many punches as both Kellen Mond and Sean Mannion struggled against the 49ers. Granted, even an evil propaganda minister would have a hard time making a silk purse out of this, but if the Vikings were still committed to developing Mond, the announcers would have been warned in production meetings to say something like, Throws like that are all part of the learning process, and Mond is seeing some things he doesn't see every day in practice. Coaches will be happy to see a throw like that on film so they have something to correct!
Preseason homer announcers are terrible sources of information about what is happening on the field but generally excellent sources of information about what the organization is trying to sell you.
At press time, it sounded like most of this weekend's preseason finales will be excruciating, with most teams holding out not just their starters but any rookies expected to contribute right away. If you are the type of fan who reads daily "projected 53-man roster" updates, this weekend is for you. And if you want to know who your favorite team's sixth receiver or eighth defensive back will be, it pays to listen to the local broadcast as well as watch. In-house broadcast teams are told who to pump up and who to politely ignore. If UDFA X records a third-quarter sack but the announcers focus on what a great job UDFA Y did in coverage, it probably means that Y is all but guaranteed a roster spot. If Denzel Mims catches a 40-yard pass but Charles Davis says, That's the kind of thing Mims needs to put on film right now for the whole league to see, it's not all that hard to interpret. It's not foolproof—guys can still play their way onto and off of rosters—but the broadcast narrative is usually scripted around players with an excellent chance of becoming feel-good stories, and coaches are often the uncredited script supervisors.
Of course, the veteran move is to not watch the final preseason game at all, unless you're a Steelers fan or there's some other interesting competition still in play, like a punt-off. Some teams may still give their starters a series or two, but what do you expect to learn from Tom Brady handing off twice and tossing a swing pass? We've seen most of what we need to see from the preseason and then some. Walkthrough will watch everything, or at least the replays of everything, because that's our job. Otherwise, the final preseason game is for completists and masochists.
Also, college football kicks off this weekend. If you are a Giants fan wondering who your next relevant quarterback will be, that's where the action is.
* Aaron Rodgers himself is a negativity wraith, of course. He and Sammy Watkins were putting down an uprising on the astral plane.

Trubisky signing already looking to be worthless. Surprise surprise. Only Mitch could be the sacrificial lamb and tell Pickett not to suck in their secret meetings.
And yeah Likely has looked good from what I saw. Should pair nicely with Andrews. Still need legit WRs to step up though.

I dunno. Typically '2 tight end' teams have one guy who can actually get open, and one guy who's an undersized offensive tackle. Can anyone recall a '2 tight end' pairing in which neither was much at all a blocker?
(Gronk in Foxboro was both an undersized offensive tackle AND! a guy who could actually get open; downfield even)

Gronk played the blocker role for the Pats when Hernandez was around, but both played off-tight a lot.
There was also Seattle, who had Jimmy Graham and Luke Willson for awhile. Willson was basically an H-back rather than a runty lineman. Graham was a receiver categorized as a TE for budgetary purposes.

They have different skillets more so than it was Hurst Andrews.

Ertz and Goedert were both get open guys who could block enough. In fact, Brent Celek became the de facto blocking TE late in his career, but he and Ertz both fit the get open guy role when Ertz was drafted.

When people talk about 2 tight end teams they mean teams that regularly use 2 tight ends in the passing game.
Those teams usually still do carry a tight end who's basically primarily blocking and special teams. I don't really think there are many teams that carry less than 3 TEs at all.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Ravens rolled with a 3 TE offense. As a Jets fan I'm wondering who they put Sauce on, since it would be a waste for Reed or Sauce to worry about the receivers... probably. Honestly I'm just jinxing them, but I fully expect Likely to be the guy who kills the Jets in game 1, and have a really good season, and I expected it when the Ravens drafted him, when I was hoping the Jets would take him instead of Jeremy Ruckert.

Nick Mullens is my exhibit A of "Jimmy Garoppolo is pretty good, actually.". Lots of words are written about how Jimmy G only throws to the short-intermediate middle of the field but very few note that he has had sustained success doing that in a way a small cadre of other QBs on the same team in the same system have not.

But the saying, "we invested because we just need a guy to hold us over for when our starter is out" is um...just not true when it comes to actual practice. Especially for Mullens. Like literally. Every single year he's started a game (2 SF, 1 CLE), the team missed the playoffs in the end.
If your starter goes down, like Jimmy, you're usually better off pivoting and just playing a whole new game of trying to surprise the opposition with the cheapest, funkiest guy you can find instead of saying "we need the 33rd best QB instead of 44th, lets trade a potential future Donald Driver to make that happen"

If ever there were a product you rent instead of own, it's a submarine. It combines all the worst parts of boats and swimming pools.

Technically true is the best kind of true. Mostly it's opportunity. Hernandez was stuck behind a rookie of Andrews' caliber. Gronkowski was a 2nd round rookie. Two rookie TEs combined for 123 receptions for 1109 yards while basically obstructing each other.

Leak and they’re doomed, I imagine the only people who know the real numbers are Steve B, EDC and a small handful of others at the top.

I think this is exactly right. They are tip-toeing. The last thing they want is to be perceived by Lamar as disrespectful. An interesting sidebar is that this may show how much of the info we usually hear about negotiations is leaked by agents. No agents this time, and no info whatsoever.
I imagine the only people who know the real numbers are Steve B, EDC and a small handful of others at the top.
Sashi Brown took over as Ravens president this year, for the retiring Dick Cass. The “president” role in the Ravens organization has usually dealt with contract details. So I would guess the only people who know the real numbers are owner Bisciotti, GM DeCosta, and Sashi Brown.

I didn't realize until a gentleman with that name started appearing in the news that any use of 'likely' w.r.t. him is going to look like a pun even if it really isn't. Fortunately, as an analytics site, the torture factor should be next to nonexistent shifting to 'probable' or 'probably'

Would Baltimore consider taking a page of the Patriots' playbook and run 22 formation and go empty? Being spread that wide with a base defense against Lamar Jackson is terrifying. And if you go small, well Baltimore really likes to run the ball.
The 2011 Pats also had two really good TEs out of the slot/wide, an enormous RB room, and a bunch of injured vets/retreads/slot guys for receivers.

Ok I'll make my insane, probably never going to happen prediction. The Steelers will make the playoffs. I know this isn't quite as profound now with the 7th seed out there, but still. Btw, last year I thought the Steelers were finally going to crash and burn. I think this is the ultimate high floor team/franchise.
Last year I really wanted to pick the Bengals to be my dark horse playoff team but I didn't have the guts.

And such a weird time to say it when...Pickett looks kinda good. Ok maybe that was too early in the draft, but uh, Skylar Thompson was available LATE and he looks competent (but too bad the Dolphins had to sign Teddy to that nice sized contract)!
But seriously, just take shots at it when that's your QB room. Who cares if they suck. As they learned quickly the UDFA QBs are buns and do you really need another RB that high? As funny as it is that the Vikings special teams coordinator thinks so highly of the offense that he expects a "punt-off", Jordan Berry has been released. So unfortunately, it will be less a competition and more of a victory lap for Ryan Wright. He should get plenty of opportunities to showcase himself unless Mond throws 5 picks or something
